Why both king posts should always be replaced on ICE recumbent tricycles

• Geometry and revision versions: As a recumbent bicycle manufacturer, ICE revises steering geometries (e.g. track width, caster, steering lever angle) in detail over the course of model years. A new king post corresponds to the current production specification. Differences compared to older batches lead to asymmetrical steering behaviour, an uneven toe-in angle and uneven tyre wear.
• Steering influence during braking: The ICE front axle is designed with sophisticated geometry to minimise steering influence during one-sided braking. Even minimal differences in the steering roll radius or caster angle between the left and right sides cause the trike to pull uncontrollably to one side during emergency braking.
• Unnoticed prior damage to the opposite side: The king post was probably damaged in an accident, by contact with a kerb or in a fall. The forces generated in the process often also act on the opposite side via the tie rods and frame bridge. A hairline crack or minimal deformation cannot be detected with the naked eye.
• Bearing and tolerance play: In the worst-case scenario, the bushings, bearings and journals of a king post that has not been replaced will have a service life of around a decade. Having a brand-new king post on one side and a used one on the other results in differing steering damping and uneven return torque.
